A collection of music from Jeremy Lewis through life in Canada, London and at Ramsfold Farm. Inspiration from 1967 to current day…
I first learned to play the guitar at Sandhurst in 1961. It wasn’t in the curriculum but Philip Jay was a guitar strumming Officer Cadet in the adjoining room. He patiently taught me my way around the guitar during the few times we weren’t polishing boots. I later did a gig or two with him. This was the day of Lonnie Donegan and skiffle groups, shortly to be superseded by rather more sophisticated music from the Beatles. On leaving Sandhurst I joined the Royal Dragoons later to become the Blues and Royals. This of course is where James Blunt nurtured his talent. I spent ten years in the army including two tours of N Ireland in 1971 and 1972. It was in N Ireland that I met a fellow officer Thomas Messel who, on returning to England, introduced me to his sister. It was love at first sight (for me anyway), probably not for Polly, as the first thing she did was have me thrown into the swimming pool.We married in February 1972 and in 1974 I left the army. We lived in London, I joined a City Stockbroker just as a huge Bear Market started. My salary as a captain in the army was £4,000 a year and my starting salary in the City was £2,000. Polly also worked, her last job being with the brilliant architect Richard Rogers. In 1982 our lives took a dramatic and uplifting change with the arrival of son, Linley. When he was four we moved to Ramsfold Farm in West Sussex.
Looking back on the songs, they do fall into distinct periods and I’ll try and write a bit about what was going through my mind under the three different headings. I have written some children’s songs and a couple of N Ireland songs which I will record later.
Thank you for reading this far and I hope you enjoy the songs
